Ray James Tjangala [c1958-]

Born around 1958 at Yunala rockhole, west of Kiwirrkurra in the Western Desert, Ray James Tjangala is now an internationall recognised Pintupi artist. He is the son of Anatjari Tjampitjinpa and Tjunkaya Napangati. Tjampitjinpa and his family were one of the last groups to come in from the dessert in 1963 under the Welfare Patrols scheme and moved to the Papunya settlement in the Northern Territory. It was in the early 1970‘s that Ray James was taught to paint under the guidance of George Tjungarrayi and other notable senior artists. His work depicts stories from the Tingari dreaming during Tjukurrpa. Ray James and his famous father featured in the historic Papunya Tula: Genesis and Genius exhibition in 2000.
