Gloria Petyarre [c1943-]
Gloria is a founding member of the famous Utopia women’s Batik group formed in the 197os and was instrumental in pioneering the traditional iconography of the Anmatyerre onto silk. In the early 1980s, Gloria transferred her vast talents to canvas and acrylics. She is the sister of the equally famous and is internationally recognised as the ‘queen of the leaf painters’. Gloria’s body of magnificent work has been extensively exhibited and collected all over the world. In July 2007, one of her large ‘leaf’ paintings sold at a Lawson Menzies auction for $78,000. As an indication to her universal aesthetic appeal, Gloria recently sold the copyright to one of her leaf motifs to the Hermes fashion house in Paris.
